Wickenden Farm

Repurposing, restoration, and modern extensions give new purpose and use to disused historic outbuildings on a rural family farm in West Sussex.

Sharpthorne, West Sussex

Our project sensitively repairs and extends a number of outbuildings that have long since ceased as part of day-to-day operations and have fallen into disrepair. Each building has different challenges from those that had been poorly extended in the past to those that were built with a short life expectance but still worth salvaging.

Our proposal is to phase the work overtime with the buildings that were most useful to the family in the short term being completed first, along with those that needed remedial work to stop further decline. New uses include converting an old stable building into guest accommodation, an extended creative workspace, and a barn conversion for a classic car collection.

The spaces between the buildings are improved with new materials and landscaping to create courtyards that provide the necessary simple functionality for a working farm blended with everyday domestic use. Reuse is inherently sustainable, but in addition to this, our new works use highly insulated solutions to reduce energy usage and running costs for the converted buildings.
