The Cottage
This extension project is on a unique site of outstanding natural beauty in the Surrey North Downs.
The design is a simple sculpted form that balances the overall slightly ad hoc composition of the existing house, which has been extended numerous times over its lifespan.
Reigate, Surrey
Deep revealed picture windows are punched into the elevation creating window seats allowing connections to strategic views. The extension provides an open plan kitchen, dining and family room.
The extension is crafted from selected natural and exposed materials, giving the feeling of warmth and simplicity. The dominant material is the chalk-coloured sandblasted textured brick, which matches the chalk ridges of the North Downs.
The chalk of the North Downs has a long history and significance during numerous battles where, in WWII, it was excavated by Welsh miners for bunkers and boltholes, which are still visible today.
The extension is grounded and locked in the broader landscape with a thickened external polished concrete terrace.
Planters are cut into the concrete surface to act as a transition between the open landscape and the extension.
