Three Townhouses
Our site on Lonsdale Road has an exceptional position fronting the Thames in Barnes with long views across the river towards Dukes Meadows to the west.
Barnes, London
The site was previously home to a three-storey warehouse building known as De Worde House which was an outlier in its scale and massing to the domestic scaled neighbouring houses.
Our project presented the opportunity to repair the formerly disjointed building scale by fitting a terrace house typology familiar to the neighbouring context. The defining end gable form of the three townhouses mirrors its neighbours to the north, where end gable roofs are used to give presence and orientation towards the river.
A pared-back material of handmade linear bricks is used to shape reveals and soffits, creating a solid profile of openings and projection for views. A modern projecting bay window on the first floor of the bookend houses defines the full-width first-floor living arrangement.
The two end houses collectively work together with a slightly more subtle central townhouse composition to create a block similar to the rhythm of larger and smaller blocks of buildings along the river.
The living arrangement is split over four floors, with the main living spaces facing the river and the rear garden. A crafted timber stair is centrally along one side of the boundary wall to allow full-width rooms front and back to enjoy the best views and natural light.
